I have read all of Stinnette's Jessis Mcdermitt series and we paid for a book and got a short story this time. He wrote Pescador out of the future books, which I think is a serious mistake, and Jessie bought a mini gun I suppose for one of his boats or plane. What's next ? Is Jessie going to buy a surface to air missile and he kills off Kim, Rusty or Deuce. He needs to get back to basics with a small dose of reality or he is going to start losing readers. Wayne we deserve better than this book (short story)
I love the series but this book felt different. It seemed rushed and the story line never seemed to tie together . It was way too short and lacked the details I've come to expect. I'm hoping the stress of starting the Merciless Charity series, along with relocating to another state was the cause of this short story advertised as a novel. I'm a big fan and will be looking forward to the next Jesse McDermott adventure. I hope the author will slow down and get back to what got him where he is now. Could have been another 5 star.
Having read all of Wayne Stinnett's books in the "Fallen" series, I was pleasantly surprised to see this edition advertised and quickly downloaded it to my Kindle. Fallen Tide read differently for me after almost a year-long absence from the series, this story seemed to lack much of the detail and side trips that Jesse and his group usually took during a story. In this edition, when Jesse and his group stumble upon the kidnappers, the story quickly wrapped up during the final 10% of the book. Perhaps, it is due to this book being the shortest of all others in the series.I still enjoyed the story, it was suspenseful and gave readers an up close look at many of the military weapons and secrets. When I finished, I discovered that I had also missed #7 as well - I quickly purchased it and plan to read it next. I'm hoping that it will be more engaging. On a final note, Wayne has eliminated Pescador, the wonder dog. I've enjoyed reading about this animal and have marveled over many of the things this pet did. His absence going forward will be missed!I'll be watching for #9 to come out and will certainly purchase the book when its available. Thanks Wayne for an enjoyable series so far!John Podlaski, authorCherries - A Vietnam War Novel
When I first started reading the Jesse McDermitt “Fallen†series it appeared to me to be a blatant copy of Randy Wayne White’s Doc Ford novels (Mr. Stinnett to his credit has conceded an admiration for RWW and the Doc Ford series). However I stuck with them because I really like the main character. Due to a minor back injury at the beginning of the recent Labor Day holiday I had the time to read novels 6, 7 and 8 in succession. I was very impressed with the current level of character development and the plots.Mr. Stinnett has brought Jesse McDermitt and his “family†(blood, close friends and his team members) into their own. This is to me where he deviates from RWW in that “family†is a focus point. With this novel, “Fallen Tide†he brings it to forefront even more. His “family†and his islands inhabitant’s seem to be increasing. Jesse’s connection to them is much tighter. His reconnection with both of his daughters is playing out much like real life. While he is still a bit gung ho in jumping in to the situation he is a more the reluctant hero here and this makes the “dedication†near the end very satisfying for me as a reader. Kind of a twist.I’m looking forward to reading #9, Fallen Angel as well as his Charity series.
Sennett hit the nail on the head with this great read. Unlike book 7 he nailed characterization, setting and description of events and places. He has a talent that places a thought in the readers' mind and leads the reader through a complex scenario only to find out that the author outfoxed him. It is a great way to make a book a dynamic page turner. He added a very nice touch with his faithful companion Pescador the fishing dog. His daughter Kim, has been a subject since book one but finally Kim was brought to light as a real character and a "chip of the old block." This father daughter interaction adds a new dimension to a great book. I recommend this as a great read for all both old and not so old. Make sure you have some time to read because you won't be able to put it down. L Lee Parmeter Author
I am a huge fan of this series of books. I just cant wait for the next adventure. I agree with several of the other reviews. The plot could have been developed better. There were just moments that didnt get closed up at the end. Where Jesse promises the security captain 5 minutes alone with the killer. Didnt happen. Also writing Pescador out of the book is a mistake. And, Kim is just too unrealistic for a teenager. Pilot, knows the Keys fluently but didnt grow up there? Really? She reminds me of Lucas Davenport's daughter Letti in the "Prey" series. No one has kids that great! Kim is way too involved in this book. Death... no big deal but im 18. I have been flying airplanes for over 30 years and with the combined experience level of Jessie and Kim, they would have been fish food long ago and the Beaver would be at the bottom of the ocean.I am a huge fan of Wayne's. I just hope Jessie is around alot longer but where to go now? Maybe its time for a charter!
Jessie would like to lead a quiet life , fishing and sharing his retirement from the military with family and friends . That never seems to happen . I was hooked with the first of the FALLEN series and marathon read all of them in a week and a half . I learned sooo much about our military and brotherhood . I felt I knew these characters intimately , like my own family . Book 8 solved my question to the author about Pescadore . A dog he found early on in the series . I was in book 7 when I emailed the author asking if the mystery of Pescadores would be solved . As promised I was answered back within half an hour that book 8 answered my questions . It was a very satisfying answer being a huge part of the story . Lots of technology, boats and weapons and heroism and of course the backdrop of the Keys and island life .
