I was hooked right from the start. The author's story about being a dog trainer with a reactive dog resonated true for me as well. I have a very nice, sweet, lap dog of a baby Australian Cattle Dog. He is great and gets along with other dogs well. However, when I am feeling anxious (as I am a lot, especially when things are changing) he feeds into my anxiety and becomes defensive on my behalf. His sense of our personal space shrinks and he does not want anyone else in it. I am also a trainer and have worked countless hours to desensitize him and counter-condition him, but the latest reactivity I thought might be the end of our competition days and even the end of our hiking days. However, this book gives lots of useful information and training recipes I am already using and teaching. This is the first book I have ever read on aggression and reactivity that specifically mentioned the handler's response. Because if you are doing well with your dog, you are truly a team. I am much more aware of my responses and my dog seems to have come back into balance again. He was not the most severe, but he is big enough that a bite would cause damage. The training recipes in here are easy to follow and there is stuff for anyone from the beginner to the advanced trainer. I read it in a week, and that was only because work, life and sleep got the in the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with aggression and reactivity.
I read this book prior to bringing a 3 year old male Siberian Husky home from the "pound". He had been owner relinquished to animal control after I had rescued him and returned to his owner. The reason is that he got out of his yard again and killed a chihuahua. I knew that I wanted to be able to take him in public, and I hoped that at some point I could stop using the muzzle I planned to use. Basically, after establishing some clicker training, to direct his attention to my face, I never had to use a muzzle and I take him out exercising with me everyday for 2 to 3 hours while I cycle and he runs alongside. I have to say that: 1) My dog turned out a lot easier than I anticipated, and also, 2) the "Look" command to direct the eye contact, (as taught in this book) is very powerful for an intelligent dog. I don't think that his breed is the type that would do very well in obedience class because he is too independent thinking and stubborn. But by combining high desire food (fried strips of meat) with a clicker, and directing his attention to me, I was able to get his seperation anxiety under control as well as get him totally focused on me (ignoring other dogs). This book has a lot of simple but powerful things in it!
Just what I needed to help understand and communicate with my challenging dog! Instead of fighting against behavior, this method shows how to make a connection with a complicated dog personality and build confidence and cooperation within the relationship. EASY to understand and implement.
It does have a well outlined plan to follow for a reactive dog. I was however quite surprised at how frequently the author referred to being the dog's leader and basically how the human must be in control. This really seemed to go against the what I'd expect from a Karen Pryor Academy graduate. Overall, though it is a useful book for most people.I found "Fired Up, Frantic and Freaked Out" by Laura VanArendonk to be better suited to my particular dog though.
I read this book in preparation for adopting a rescue pup. It was so helpful and it made our transition with our new addition much easier. Our dog arrived with anxiety and fear aggression issues. The book shared so many wonderful strategies, but strategies alone are not an instant fix. Helping your dog through these behaviors takes time and consistency. The strategies take practice and owners need to be patient with themselves and their dog. I find myself going back to review the content again and again. Thank you, Emma Parsons, for writing such a great resource!
Although my 10 month old pup is not aggressive, he can get very over stimulated. The processes outlined in this book are most helpful for shaping a more desirable behavior. It's easy to follow, you don't need a lot of experience in training to have great success. If you're not familiar with clicker training, not to worry, Emma Parsons takes you through the method step by step and makes it so easy you'll be amazed.
Really recommend this book. I'm a vet, with a reactive dog. This was recommended to me by a local behavior vet. Takes clicker training to the next level. It can really help you learn to cope with that sort of behavior.
When I bought this book I was in desperation mode. I feel the expected results were over-hyped. My Ziva was a guarder. Anything on the floor or ground was hers and she was very aggressive in protecting what she felt was hers. My trainer recommended this book. It did not work for this situation. Ultimately, she bit me in the face over a bone that was six or eight feet away from me. I was sitting in a chair in the patio. I have no idea what set her off. My vet put her on maximum dose of Prozac for her weight (95 lbs.).She responded well to the clicker when the goal was treats for clicks. When she was on guarding task, she wouldn't respond, even with the meds.I rated this book well because I think it will be effective in many, not all, cases. I have used and seen used many examples of successful click training. The tactics just didn't work with Ziva.
I rated Click to Calm 5 stars due to the fact this book actually works! I coupled it with a professional dog trainer who recommended Click to Calm, read it 3 times. It is an easy ready. It has helped and I have only had one meet with the trainer. You do have to invest time with your dog. I am still lax, but I have seen results. Click to Calm is simple instruction. Yo do not have to guess at what the uther is saying, no long read about other dogs. Clear read, simple with many exercises. Great book for anyone from puppy to adult. I thought it to late. My pyrenees mix is 6.5 years. Never to late to teach an old dog how to be calm.
