Tom Browning is an amazing artist. I know Tom. I've been to many of Tom's shows, and we're even Facebook friends. This book is loaded with good information for aspiring artists. The problem I have is that the book imagery is quite dated. Tom's current work is far more vibrant, eye-catching, and refined that when this book was first created, and I wish there could be a revision that presents that. Buyers should be aware that they'll get great information, but with older works of Toms with a more dated palette and printing style. If you're reading this for the artistic help, buy it! If you're looking for a book of Tom's work, consider the more recent full-color books he's done.

I ordered this book as a painter wanting to learn from a master painter. It is beautifully illustrated, and full of useful information, as well as demonstrations covering a multitude of problems. What a great bounty of information in one book! A must have for anyone that is looking to improve their techniques, or just to review and learn from.

Tom Browning, in his book Timeless Techniques for Better oil painting, explains his straightforward and basic approach to oil painting. He explains his working process in a very logical and understanding manner. With no frills or ego Mr. Browning teaches the basics of representational painting and how to put a painting together from start to finish. I have been painting for over 20 years and still recommend this book to all of my students as the one to start with to really understand how to see as an artist sees. It's a must in every painter's library.

Tom Browning gave concise lessons, with plain language, easily understood. His illustrations alone are worth buying the book for. The lessons on color are very good. Wish I had owned it years ago!

Tom Browning's paintings are exceptional and many of his newer works are included in this edition. Mr. Browning gives good information on art basics based on his career as a trained artist.

About the Author
Richard S. Quimby is an Associate Professor of physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  He earned a BS in EE/Physics at Clarkson College of Technology in 1975 and a PhD in Physics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1979. He has been actively involved in research relating to photonics devices such as fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers since the 1980's.  His work has resulted in approximately 35 publications, as well as three invited conference presentations. He also is a contributor to the book FLUORIDE GLASS FIBER OPTICS (Academic Press 1991).
