You’re either a fan of this series and the people in it and the way events tend to unfold and tie together, or you’re not and likely dropped out some time ago and are just checking out reviews due to morbid curiosity. If you’re totally new and are trying to read this book without reading others that came before it, you’re going to be pretty lost and bereft of the richness of the world that the author has built over several books. This is a fun series that does deal with heavy themes like familial betrayal and murder and greed, death and loss and grief. But it doesn’t rub your nose in gore and brutality. It’s a sophisticated cozy mystery that manages to keep your favorite core characters pretty clean and free of the evil that infests even some of the nicer seeming residents of the town.Walt and Danielle are progressing nicely in their relationship. They’re not rushing anything and are developing their wonderful friendship in a charming way that allows us to see Walt take in the world as a living person, instead of the ghost that he’s been for almost a century. There are many indications the friendship will indeed evolve into a beautiful romantic relationship, but circumstances do dictate that we are nowhere near a proposal on bended knee. Especially since the “circumstances” largely involve Walt hopping around with one leg in a cast. It was pretty clever of the author to use this as a natural barrier ensuring Dani and Walt don’t rush things and focus instead on Walt adjusting to life again. It’s a very rewarding experience made even more so by some lovely surprises the author has cooked up for us. It’s rare in the harsh cynical worlds that so many other authors create in other genres that we get the cake and get to eat it, too. And speaking of cakes, enjoy Walt discovering that Danielle’s cakes taste as good as they smell.I’m very happy that we are so far into the series and the author has not run out of steam nor lost anything magical in bringing Walt back to life for us and for Dani. This series has leaped to the head of the pack as my favorite among the cozy mysteries I follow since discovering this genre about a year ago.

It was interesting to see how having a physical body would affect Walt but otherwise this book with its convoluted plot between the Bondoni brothers, Mac and Clint was very confusing. Throw in a mysterious Russian woman for good measure and your head is spinning. And now Danielle turns into J. B. Fletcher and is the one who solves the mystery, despite there being 3 capable detectives and 2 F.B. I. Men on scene. The author is clearly reaching in this book and the plausibility is lacking. The whole thing has become cartoonist with too many ghosts and too many people who can see them. And while I can accept ghosts and someone seeing them, the idea that a ghost can enter someone else's body and then that body somehow physically changes into the ghosts body is really too much for me to believe. So, while I have enjoyed the series, this is the last book for me.

This story, and this series, left me with a sense of rightness, of things happening as they should for these mature and gracious characters. Even as things develop between the primary characters throughout the series, the pace is rational and hopeful; this series never leaves the reader hurting.I also thoroughly enjoy learning new things with each of these stories. Things I have googled so far, prompted by this series: mansard roofs; Packard Coupe; fedoras; flappers; negging; pin striped suits; million dollar necklaces; men's underwear in the 1920's; marriages of double twins; Victorian parlors; Astoria, Oregon; various women's fashions which did and did not fit the 1920's, mentioned in the stories; KKK activities in Oregon; brindle pit bulls; wire versus whale bone women's undergarments, etc. I love the specific facts mentioned in the stories, and I love being able to visualize these two colliding worlds, Walt's and Danielle's. Actually, they're not colliding. They are gracefully woven together.

So far one of the worst ones in the series, although based on honest reviews I've seen of the other books, it wouldn't surprise me if there were worse ones yet.At this point, after so many books, they are all beginning to get stale, they all run together, almost all of them involve money, some criminals and the main character. The writing is becoming tedious and boring. It seems like the characters never learn any lessons, they never have any sort of character growth, they just are who they are and continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Here's an idea, maybe instead of just taking the same concept that you've used since the first book, maybe you actually mix it up a little bit and change the pace up? For a book that's filed under paranormal fiction, there's surprisingly very little paranormal stuff taking place.

There are very few series that I have followed continually. They either become routine and boring or change the plot and characters to the extent that I would not have started them in the first place.I thought Book 16 "The Ghost and the Doppelganger" had reached this point. My spouse thought differently and had already pre-ordered "The Ghost of Second Chances". I only began reading this book 16 when I had nothing left in my queue. Most of the way through, I found it interesting but believed it was taking the series in a direction that was of no interest to me.Near the end of the book, the plot changed and became more interesting. I think I would have preferred Walt as a ghost; but, am willing to see where he is taken in the next book.
